A man has been banned from driving for more than three years after being caught drunk behind the wheel.

Lawrence Hulbert, aged 63, pleaded guilty to drink driving in Weymouth Magistrates Court on April 25.

Hulbert drove his car on Great George Street in Weymouth after consuming so much alcohol that he tested at more than double the drink during limit, at 76 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35 microgrammes.

Tara Olney, prosecuting, said: "The defendant came to the attention of the CCTV as he staggered through the town. He was seen to enter his vehicle on St Thomas Street"

Hulbert was then tracked down and stopped by police, who found him in the driving seat. He admitted to drinking, before failing a roadside test.

Ms Olney told the court that Hulbert, of Dorset Close, Weymouth, has previous convictions for drunk driving, with the latest being in 2017.

Lee Christmas, mitigating, said: "He pleaded guilty at the first opportunity, and there has been that gap in offending (since 2017). He is someone keen to engage with probation."

Chair of the magistrate's bench Helen Busby sentenced Hulbert to a nine-month community order and disqualified him from driving for 40 months. This may be reduced by 40 weeks if he completes a course on drunk driving.

He has been ordered to complete mental health treatment over 12 weeks, 10 rehabilitation activity requirements days and to pay a surcharge of £114 and court costs of £40.
