Weymouth fans help sell club to new players - Mark Molesley

Weymouth are recognised as one of the bigger teams in Step 2 after their endeavours at National League level in recent seasons.

Beyond playing terms, Molesley has been using the Bob Lucas faithful as a mark of distinction to attract fresh blood to the Terras.

Last season, Weymouth regularly posted crowds in excess of 1,000 and around 2,500 home fans were present at the Yeovil derby, together with more than 2,000 Glovers supporters.

Weymouth also have one of the larger away followings in the National League South, thanks to the sterling work of the Terras’ Travel Club.

And Molesley feels the fans help Weymouth compete in the player market.

“They’re a massive part of me selling this football club,” he told Echosport.

“Especially with the competitive nature of finances in this league at the moment, we’re just finding it’s scaling up out of control, really.

“It’s important what we lack in finances we make up in environment, our community, our fans.

“Our package is a whole lot more than just money, and it has to be.

“We can’t compete with a lot of the clubs, even clubs below us are making very big noises now.

“Weymouth have always been, previously when I was here and now, where we’ll do our best financially for players.

“But it’s a lot more than that, it’s the way that we play, playing in front of our fans.

“Hopefully, if you leave the club you go on to bigger and better things.

“I think we’ve always had a reputation of doing that, of players playing some of their best football with us.

“That’s what we pride ourselves on and how we sell our club.”

Elsewhere, Chesham United, Salisbury, Enfield Town and Hornchurch have been confirmed as newly-promoted and are expected to play in Weymouth's division next season.

National League relegated sides Dorking and Boreham Wood are expected to drop down, with Oxford City shoehorned into the National League North.
