A DORSET mental health charity will mark its 70th anniversary in 2016.

But Dorset Mind is not resting on its laurels, and says that now, more than ever, the role of charities in providing support has become increasingly important.

The charity is gearing up to expand operations at a time when central and local funding is being cut, and has appointed a new chief executive and a new patron to help promote the work they do.

Chris Price, Chief Executive said: “I am delighted to be leading and driving Dorset Mind at a really critical stage as it is poised to make a huge difference by supporting more people experiencing mental health difficulties across Dorset.

“We know that there are many people who currently need our support with their mental health in order to improve their independence and quality of life.

“We are committed to continue our work alongside NHS services, local councils and other local charities and to look at ways in which we can extend those services. We will ensure that both new and existing services can be part of referral pathways (including self-referral), thus avoiding long waiting lists.”

He added: “I am also very pleased to welcome Dr Andrew Mayers as a Patron at this important stage of our development.”

Dr Andrew Mayers is a psychologist at Bournemouth University and a mental health campaigner and educator.

He said: “I have been following the work of Dorset Mind for a number of years. I am delighted to have been appointed Patron, as I am inspired by the drive and vision that Chris Price has brought to the charity.

“I am confident that existing services will be enhanced and new opportunities for mental health support will be developed. I see my role as using my local and national influence to promote that work and help facilitate some of those new opportunities.”

As part of the planned expansion, Dorset Mind is looking for people to help them to provide better mental health services for the people of Dorset. In particular, they are currently looking for a new Trustee with a strong HR background. There are a number of other volunteer roles available (including helping with fundraising or IT). Dorset Mind are also looking to link with other charities and organisations across Dorset so that, in partnership, they can provide mental health support in a safe and appropriate manner.
