A FLOOD alert has been issued for the entire Dorset coast.

The alert, which means flooding is possible and for residents to be prepared, affects Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, West Bay, Bothenhampton, Burton Freshwater, Burton Bradstock, Cogdean Beach, Chesil Beach, West Fleet, East Fleet and Chiswell.

The alert has since been upgraded for West Bay and Lyme Regis Harbours to a flood warning which means flooding is expected and 'immediate action is required'.

The flood alert also covers Castletown, Weymouth, Preston Beach, Swanage Bay, Studland Bay, Sandbanks, Poole Harbour, Bournemouth Beach, Hengistbury Head and Christchurch Harbour.

Regarding the west Dorset alert, the Environment Agency said: "This Flood Alert affects the whole of the West coast of Dorset particularly at Lyme Regis, West Bay and Chiswell and will remain in force from 11pm on Wednesday, January 14 until 5am on Thursday, January 15.

"The forecast wind direction is south westerly, and the forecast wind strength is force 9.

"Very strong winds and large waves bring the potential for spray overtopping promenades, quays and along exposed coasts."

Regarding the alert for Weymouth and east Dorset, the Agency said: "This Flood Alert affects the whole of the East Coast of Dorset, particularly at Preston Beach, and will remain in force from 12:30am on Thursday, January 15 until 6am on Thursday, January 15.

"The forecast wind direction is south westerly, and the forecast wind strength is force 9. Very strong winds and large waves bring the potential for spray overtopping promenades, quays and along exposed coasts."
