A nursing home has been praised by residents after it was given a good Care Quality Commission report.

The Queen Charlotte Nursing Home in Weymouth was judged to be safe, effective and caring by the inspector, who noted the good relationship between staff and residents.

The report stated how staff appeared to understand the needs of residents along with their likes and dislikes, which helped them to keep their dignity.

A resident of the care home said: “They always knock and keep an eye on me. I feel safe here because of that.”

A resident’s family member said: “The way they look after my relative is how I would want to be looked after.”

The nursing home was also praised for the meals that are provided for residents.

The inspector noted that the cook had a thorough understanding of individuals’ dietary needs and clear systems in place to identify where people required a soft diet to eat safely; meals and drinks were provided where there were concerns about weight loss.

The report comes after staff underwent comprehensive staff training to cover topics ranging from infection control and moving and assisting to protecting people from abuse.

In 2013, The Queen Charlotte Nursing Home was placed under scrutiny after the home failed to meet five of the seven standards of the Care Quality Commission, and a resident, Jill Tambling, was emaciated while in the hands of home carers.

The nursing home has since turned itself around by holding regular staff meetings to teach best practice, where staff were encouraged to suggest ideas.

As a result, the latest report noted how staff were clear about their roles and responsibilities and communicated well with residents.

The inspector said: “Other learning opportunities were offered in areas which were relevant to the needs of people at the home and also where staff expressed an interest.”

Debbie Preston, the home’s operation manager at Queen Charlotte Nursing Home, welcomed the report.

She said: “This is a tribute to the dedication and enthusiasm of all my staff.

“We are passionate about providing the highest quality care and are delighted this has been recognised by the inspector.”
