CLUB records were smashed and new personal bests set by members of BustinSkin Triathlon Club at this year’s Outlaw Iron Distance Triathlon in Notting-ham.

The club’s two teams and eight individual entrants slogged it out over the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run.

Martyn Alexander was the first BustinSkin athlete home in a time of 10hrs 56.12secs, knocking more than 55 minutes off his 2013 mark.

Matt Pye, the club’s oldest representative at the event, reduced his time from last year by an incredible one hour and 45 minutes.

“Matt is just amazing,” said team boss Mark Steen. “His races go from strength to strength and he performs like a young gun.

“He has the respect of all of the young athletes in the club and he is a true legend.”

Adam Gough, competing in his first Iron distance race, stuck to his game plan and finished in 10:59:15.

Both teams had great races, with the ‘Blokes’ (Steen/swim, Kit Walker/bike, Tris Best/run) coming home in 11:04:53 and the ‘Babes’ (Lindsey Hubbard/swim, Rowena Taylor/bike, Amanda Bayley/run) in 11:31:39.

Captains Hubbard and Steen were really proud of their team members who all put in great performances in each discipline.

Matt Bacon and Clint Cornick both suffered from cramp during the race, making it almost impossible to carry on.

But they both dug deep and, with the amazing support from the 38 members who had travelled up to watch, they continued when many would have quit.

Dave Wiltshire also took part in his first Iron distance race.

Steen added: “Dave saw us come back from last year’s event and was drawn in to the madness that is long-distance racing.

“From then on he set his goal of competing in this year’s event and he smashed his expected time of 14-and-a-half hours to finish in 13:41:55.

“It just shows you what can be achieved when you get involved in a good club with many training partners to get those extra miles in.

“Nothing in this event is impossible without some good coaching, keeping the right attitude and getting involved in the first place.”

The only downside to the day was with Ed Speight, whose knees were so bad after the bike ride that he had to call it a day on the advice of the course medics.

However, he will be back racing soon with many others from the club in Challenge Weymouth.

The Outlaw Triathlon was the latest in a series of successful events for BustinSkin members this year.

Some who have won races at various locations in the UK qualified to race for their country in international competitions.

Walker finished 100th at the Ironman Nice in France, while Thomas Heal and Lloyd Cranny, both making their debuts over the longer distance, recorded times of 13:50:34 and 13:12:57 respectively.

Chris Randall has improved his form from last year and has been selected to race for Team GB in Canada at the end of 2014.

Junior member Joe Arundel won the Osprey Sprint in April, the Salty Sea Dog triathlon in Bournemouth in July, and also represented his country at the Holten ETU Triathlon Junior European Cup in the Nether-lands.

Claire Hunt took part in Ironman UK in Bolton, finishing in 16:37:36 and her fair share of blisters.

And, as ever, Bustinskin’s own Osprey Sprint on Portland was another big success, with the host club claiming the top three male finishers.

Many of the winners and runners-up in the BustinSkin events came from the club, which is a great testament to their individual training and the atmosphere around the place.

The Weymouth Classic and Sprint take place at Bowleaze Cove on August 17 and there are still places left.

Along with triathlons, Bustin-Skin Events also run a series of aquathlons on a Wednesday night at Bowleaze Cove.

The Wednesday evenings cost £6 for non-members and £5 for members.
