AN AWARDS presentation has rounded off a successful year for the Weymouth Junior Netball Club.

The evening celebrated the players of the year as well as those who have improved the most. Special awards were handed out to recognise outstanding achievement and commitment to the club.

Awards were also handed out for overall players of the year for the high 5 and senior sections.

The 2017 Summer season also saw the WJNC team gain earn promotion to division one.

The club secured 12 out of 20 places on the U14 Weymouth Satellite Academy 2016/2017, part of England Netball’s Performance pathway (Teisha Barrey, Evie Hambleton-White, Millie Hambleton-White, Jaimee Browne, Tia Chaloner, Isabel Jolliffe, Louise Robertson, Olivia Conning, Frankie Harris, Holly Calton, Gabby Bennett and Maisie Fowler).

In addition to this the club saw Grace Goodwin, Skyla Erskine, Izzie Roberts and Jessamy Baker all being selected for the U16 County Academy 2016/2017 season.

For the 2017/2018 season Skyla has been joined by Millie Hambleton-White, Jaimee Browne, Tia Chaloner and Carla Wood who were all selected after three screening sessions.

Players have also received recognition elsewhere as Lauren Leatherland’s commitment to the club saw her being awarded the Young Volunteer of the Year Award at the South West Region’s ‘Goalden Globe Awards’.

Lauren Leatherland started volunteering at 14 to help her complete her Bronze D of E Award and now she is now a qualified UKCC Level 1 coach and C Award umpire.

In addition club stalwart Caroline Kellaway was nominated for the Unsung Hero Award due to her commitment to netball.

Jaimee Browne received an outstanding achievement award for her achievement in umpiring.

At 13, Jaimee passed England Netball’s ‘Into Officiating’ Umpire Award and is currently the youngest umpire in the league and more girls are in training.

Chair, Kelly Browne, said: “The club continues to go from strength to strength. We have high quality coaching staff and a supportive parent committee.

“It is pleasing to see the successes of the girls, both past and present, in gaining places on the England Netball Performance Pathway and continuing their passion for the game in the local league, but at the heart of the club is the enjoyment and development of the current members. “
