Dorset County Council's pledge to fight discrimination

3:20pm Tuesday 15th September 2009

A three-year drive is under way to combat discrimination and ensure fair treatment of everyone in Dorset communities.

Dorset County Council, in conjunction with its partner borough and district councils, has produced the first-ever joint Dorset Equality Scheme.

Spanning 2009-12, it sets out the councils’ commitment to promote understanding of different groups in society and provide a level playing field of opportunity for everyone – regardless of age, sex, race, disability or religion.

A draft copy of the scheme and its priorities is now available to read online, and the authorities are seeking public views over the next few months in order to finalise the plan by the end of the year.

National legislation requires all public sector organisations to ensure fairness and equality standards across areas such as employment, training, education and the provision of goods, facilities and services.

County council diversity and inclusion manager Sarah Reeves said: “Dorset communities have a more diverse make-up than people might think, and it is changing all the time.

“And, as well as factors like race or disability, we need to consider other issues that may disadvantage residents, such as rural isolation, poverty and lack of employment opportunities for young people.”

The Dorset Equality Scheme also pledges to: Improve councils’ understanding of the diverse, varying needs of residents.

Encourage all sections of Dorset’s communities to have a say about the delivery of public services.

Make people feel confident to report unacceptable behaviour, bullying or abuse.

Promote better understanding between different groups.

Ensure council workforces better reflect the diversity of the local labour market.

The draft plan is out for public consultation until November 5.

If you would like to give your views on its content or priorities, you can read the document and fill in an online questionnaire at: www.dorsetforyou.com/equalityscheme You can also call 01305 221523, email dorsetequalityscheme@dorsetcc.gov.uk or write to: The Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Dorset County Council, County Hall, Colliton Park, Dorchester, DT1 1XJ.
