WEYMOUTH will be promoted as an adventure sports and activity destination at this year’s Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show which starts tomorrow.

A team from Weymouth BID and local activity representatives will be promoting the borough as more than just a ‘bucket and spade’ holiday.

The show, held at the ExCel London until Sunday, is the UK’s largest outdoor show with more than 50,000 visitors. It is now in its 16th year and offers outdoor enthusiasts an opportunity to find out about new activities, new locations, buy the latest products, gear and equipment, meet a range of special guests and much more.

The team will be promoting Weymouth as the ideal destination for a wide range of activities that include cycling, sailing, rock climbing, kayaking, windsurfing, diving, walking and highlighting the added benefit of all being in fairly close proximity. The show will also help to promote the range of accommodation available in Weymouth.

A new updated leaflet has been created to show that Weymouth has to offer.

In October 2016 a team of national journalists visited the area to experience the diverse selection of activities that were available.

Nigel Reed, manager of Weymouth BID, said: “Weymouth is the perfect destination for adventure sports and with the market expanding this is the right time to promote the area. All the tourist trade reports nationally indicate the growing requirements for coastal resorts to diversify and provide a wider choice of activities particularly in niche markets with a higher spend.

“Representing Weymouth at national shows is a great way to get the area on the map and in amongst bigger tourism organisations as well as delivering the BID’s business plan.”

Weymouth BID will also be hosting a new event this year to bring together a large number of outdoor activity and adventure events in Dorset, with a particular focus on Weymouth and Portland.

The Big Dorset Outdoor Weekend will be held on May 20-21. Activities include cycling, walking and water-based activities. and managed by Creative Solutions (MPE) Ltd on behalf of the Weymouth BID.

Organiser Roy Griffiths said: “This new and exciting event will provide an amazing array of options to suit almost everyone, from those looking to try a new activity or take part in their favourite sport in our stunning location. Many of the area’s activity providers will be putting on special events in the form of taster sessions, open days, races and themed walks which will be suitable for most age groups.”
