AMBULANCE staff who won an award have decided to donate it to underprivileged children.

South Western Ambulance service staff in Weymouth were given WH Smith vouchers for being the most improved station but decided to donate the prize to others. Weymouth ambulance crew member Lisa Wilms said: “We got together and realised that although none of us need anything, there are children out there who do. We are in very tough economic times at the moment but we all think that there shouldn’t be any children going without at Christmas.

“For a couple of pounds you can give a child something lovely, you can make all the difference and change how they view the meaning of Christmas.”

Weymouth ambulance staff had help selecting gifts from WH Smith workers at the store in St Mary Street who also donated a gift to the appeal.

Manager of WH Smith, in St Mary Street, Simon Kingdon said: “We collect toys each year but we decided to donate one because this is such a fantastic cause for children who deserve a nice Christmas.”

Lulworth Castle DONATES £200

WITH just three days until Christmas, the Echo Toy Appeal has received a boost thanks to a £200 donation from Lulworth Castle.

The castle is home to the Weld family and they have given generously for the third year running to ensure needy children across the county have a reason to smile on Christmas Day.

Sally Weld said: “We have a large family who are all very well looked after and get everything they would like for Christmas.

“I know that every penny given to this appeal goes directly to the children.”

Now in its 12th year, the Echo Christmas Toy Appeal will once again be giving joy to hundreds of children.

Sally added: “The Echo doesn’t take anything out for itself. All the presents and money donated is going to the children.

“As president of the Dorset branch of the NSPCC, I know very well the hardships that some of these children face.

“I am so glad the appeal is going well, despite the tough times we are facing.

“It’s wonderful to know that people can be so giving at this time of year.”
