Sign our Swim for Free petition

AGE Concern and the Dorset Echo are running a Swim for Free campaign, calling for free swimming for under-16s and over-60s in Weymouth and Portland.

We are asking Weymouth and Portland Borough Council to reconsider its decision to reject the free swimming proposals that were introduced by the Government last year.

So far the campaign has received the support of seven-times Channel swimmer Mervyn Hughes, local swimming coach Ed Stevens and award-winning young swimmer Sian Brookes, who suffers from cerebral palsy and wants others to benefit from swimming the way she has.

It has also been backed by South Dorset MP Jim Knight, Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell and Culture Secretary Andy Burnham.

If you would like to add your support to our campaign please write your name in the comments section below.

I guess its good to see that Government Ministers really do want to use "Government Money" rather than "Tax Payer's Money" to pay for "Free" Swimming. Indeed they are printing it right now. Perhaps the Echo could contact President Mugabe to see if he is now advising Labour on how to finance Government spending.

Sorry Ian, you of all people should know that the government does not have any money, just uses taxpayers money after taking a (large) bite to pay for various things like administration, gold-plated pensions, allowances, the (un)Civil Service, etc.
I agree with the sentiments expressed.

I fell very strongly that yet again Dorset is the poor relation and as always is ubderfunded for at all leveal, Police, education, etc. Owing to expense I am able to swim only occassionally but would love to do more to keep the aches and pains away. part-sell
