NOT STIRRED: Lord March launches the Festival with a bevy of Bond girls

THE best of British motorsport will be celebrated in style at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 11-13).

Under the theme of Hawthorn to Hamilton - Britain's Love Affair with World Motor Sport, there will be everything from early Formula One cars to modern day title contenders.

Among the famous names to be remembered will be Mike Hawthorn, Jim Clark, John Surtees, Colin McRae, Barry Sheene, Jackie Stewart. Derek Bell. Colin Chapman, Gordon Murray, Lewis Hamilton and Adrian Newey.

At the official launch at Goodwood House the theme was represented by Mike Hawthorn's Ferrari 246 Dino, alongside Lewis Hamilton's 2008 McLaren-Mercedes MP4/23 F1 car.

Centre stage outside Goodwood House will be given over this year to a classic British marque not necessarily associated with motorsport - Land Rover - which this year celebrates 60 years of production.

Land Rover, in conjunction with Gerry Juddah, will create an eye-catching automotive sculpture in front of Goodwood House which will uniquely showcase the vehicles' breadth of capability.

The impressive structure will incorporate an original 1948 Land Rover, a selection of vehicles from the company's model range, finished with the acclaimed LRX concept cross-coupe.

Other anniversaries being recalled will be 50 years of the British Touring Car Champion-ship and 20 years of the British Superbike Championship.

Another famous British name, that of Ian Fleming's creation James Bond will also be celebrated at Goodwood with a display of cars from the hugely popular film series to mark 100 years since Fleming was born.

For Formula One fans the good news is that seven of the current race teams will be appearing with their latest machines and top line drivers.

Challenging them to produce the most noise will be a line-up of historic drag racers.

One of the most popular categories on the 1.6 mile hill will be the Supercars which this year will include an appearance by the new Nissan GT-R before it goes on sale.

Ford, a major sponsor of the Goodwood Festival of Speed since its inception in 1993, will be represented on the Hillclimb, on the Forest Rally Stage, and also in the Cartier Style et Luxe Concours. In addition, many of the famous racing F1 and racing sports cars present will be powered by Cosworth-Ford V8 or V10 engines.

Ford-powered cars from all around the world will be present, ranging from Indy 500 winners, to successful British Touring Car Championship machines, an ex-Michael Schumacher Benetton-Ford F1 car and Escort Mk IIs which dominated world rallying for so long.

Goodwood Festival of Speed founder, Lord March says: "It will be just fantastic to have so many great cars and drivers here at Goodwood to celebrate our theme for 2008."
