Yvonne Wykes was just one of Santa’s ‘little helpers’ in December and her boots are definitely made for walking

Before Christmas, Abbotsbury resident Yvonne’s thoughts reached out to those whose human rights are threatened and to Amnesty International the charity which works for prisoners of conscience and women’s rights amongst others.

Later this year she will be trekking the Lares region of Peru and is raising funds for her trip and for Amnesty International.

As part of her effort she held a successful Christmas sale in Strangways Hall in December raising over £150 towards her target.

Our Christmas tree was hung with her delicious shortbread stars.

Suzie Jeffcott once again amazed us as this year’s crib service at St Nicholas church had an Outer Space theme.

Children and their carers arrived as aliens, angels, stars, shepherds and kings.

Silver foil certainly had many other uses besides wrapping the turkey.

We entered the church to the sonorous tones of Rev Jack Elwin on bass saxophone accompanied by Tito Saunt on violin.

The pulpit was decked as a space ship complete with flashing lights and Suzie had script in hand ready to be adapted according to the enthusiasm of the congregation.

As the story unfolded we were told that a very modern dad had shirked his responsibilities; several ex wives, lots of children etc and was enjoying himself rocking and rolling in outer space.

However, he became lonely when he saw through his telescope all the Christmas spirit on earth.

The nativity scene unfolded and he was eventually brought back to his families by the angels and little aliens, a changed man.

Well done Suzie and your spontaneous cast, you were all marvellous.
