Abbotsbury

GETTING You There – Dorset Partnership for Older People’s Project (POPP) Community Transport Invitation takes place in Strangways Hall, Abbotsbury on Monday, September 20 at 6.30pm

They are holding a public consultation with the aim of gauging interest in a neighbourhood car scheme for Abbotsbury, Portesham and the surrounding villages.

Each scheme consists of a pool of volunteers as drivers and committee members.

Dorset POPP funds the set up costs of the new voluntary car schemes.

Resident’s feed back is valued so do go along and discuss the idea with the POPP team.

ABBOTSBURY Residents Corps ‘Village in Bloom’ prize giving took place on August 24.

There were two categories - Residents and Business.

The only criterion was that displays could be seen from the road.

The judge was James Foster Pegg of Poundbury Gardens who also donated the prizes.

James judged at the end of July after a particularly hot and dry period so a lot of containers looked a bit tired.

The lucky winners in the resident’s class were Felicity and David Lindsell of West Street for their beautiful mangers, second came Sheila Blake of Chapel View Cottages and highly commended were Mr and Mrs Sargent of West Street and Jane Burton also of West Street.

The lucky winning business was Abbey House Hotel, second – The Old School House with The Ilchester Arms Hotel and The Swan Inn both highly commended.

Well done to everyone who brightened up our village streets.

STRIPPERS and Stuffers is the catchy name of an evening class that I attend every Wednesday in the neighbouring village of Portesham at 7pm.

Janet Nightingale is our tutor and we are taught upholstery, soft furnishings and all related crafts.

There are now vacancies in our class, which is held in the Methodist Hall.

If you would like to learn from a real expert in good company who come from neighbouring towns ring Jan Nightingale on 01308 456249 and have a chat.

You are asked provide your item and bring it along to the class.

Jan will loan you her specialist tools if you don’t have your own and can obtain most of your materials for you.

My item has been a shameful very old armchair, which has been stripped to the frame, reupholstered and is now nearing completion.

AN Exhibition of Painting, Sculpture and Ceramics will be on show in Strangways Hall on Saturday and Sunday, September 25 and 26 from 10.30am–5pm

This exhibition is a collaborative display of contemporary works by three established West Dorset artists.

Painter John Rabbetts, sculptor Brendon Murless and ceramicist Katherine Lloyd have joined together to present a superb range of work that reveals their individual insight and diversity.

All are welcome.

Langton Herring

LAST September the local branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association held a very successful weekend course in Langton Herring.

A very dilapidated wall was taken down and rebuilt under the watchful eye of their tutor.

If you would like to have a go and learn the basics of this age-old craft why not join a course, which is being held over the weekend of October 9 and 10.

Ring Sally Fielding on 01035 871403 or email martinandsally@waitrose.com for more details and to book a place.
