Hello everyone, this week plans are continuing with the Olympic Sails Project. I spoke with Sue Melville, who is coordinating the project. At the first meeting on January 18th over fifty
individuals expressed an interest in taking part. The hope is that the sails will be on display along the torch route in Abbotsbury from 12th July through
the Olympics to the Paralympics which ends on 3rd September.

Abbotsbury Gardens Wing-nut tree is finally felled

Today at Abbotsbury Sub-tropical Gardens we witnessed the demise of the famous Wing-nut tree. The tree surgeons have been working for the past few weeks to remove the canopy branches; with that
work completed the tree was carefully cut to ready it for felling. The visitors to the gardens today and a few members of staff watched from a safe distance on the colonial tearooms veranda, where
many photographs were taken. A tractor was readied with a rope as the final preparations were made. The huge trunk was felled and many of the customers told me how sad they were to see the huge
tree finally down. One of the visitors from a few weeks ago told me it was the “faraway tree” for her children and those of us who have visited the gardens since childhood will sorely miss the
large impressive tree. On the positive side the gardens are constantly evolving and I’m sure there will be a new look to that area of the garden in the future.

Happy New Year to everyone! It’s been a very enjoyable Christmas in Abbotsbury and my first news item is from the Carol singing team. They went around
Abbotsbury and seemed to be having a wonderful time. Joined by Father Christmas, they raised £78 for Julia’s house. Lots of Christmas activities took place and big thank you’s to Colin and his team
at the Ilchester for his fun day and Children’s party. I don’t have news of the Beachcombers Boxing Day race yet, but hope to rectify that later. Also thanks to ATTA for organising the lights and
Christmas trees.

Just a short column this week, with a few notices about events at Christmas. There is the annual Boxing Day race starting at the Swan inn, organised by the Beachcombers association. This year you
are invited to get dressed in a costume made of boxes. You can dress as a robot or as any character you like. There is a children’s category and an adult category for the fancy dress prize.
Starting at 10.30am from the Swan Inn, teams of two are required, as it’s a three-legged race, and the route is usually through the village past the Ilchester arms and back to the Swan, but
anything can happen! Details from the Swan Inn on 01305 871249.

Firstly, I’ve been asked by Dave Stevens of the Strangways hall committee to remind everyone about the carol singing on16th December. We will be meeting at the hall at 6pm, so do come along and
don’t forget there will be mince pies and mulled wine to warm us up. Hopefully it won’t be too cold or wet and don’t worry if you’re not much of a singer no one will mind! Don’t forget your torch
and to wrap up warm.

The coffee morning for grit bins in Abbotsbury was a huge success. Nigel Melville tells me that £200 was raised in 90 minutes! He would like to thank
everyone who came along, some generous corporate donations and provisional offers from - in alphabetical order – Abbotsbury Beachcombers, Abbotsbury Tourism, ATTA, Friends of St Nicholas Church,
Hastoe Housing Association, Magna Housing Association and Raglan Housing Association and that we can now look forward to seeing all 10 of the Abbotsbury bins in place ready for whatever the winter
holds.
