THE theme of this year's Bradford Peverell Gardening and Cookery Show was pumpkins and many villagers and friends took up the challenge.

The weather and a variety of pests have tried to prevent success over the summer but on the day a good number of giant specimens appeared.

The winner of the children's section was William Webb with a terrific pumpkin weighing 44lb, and the adult's section was won by John Masters with a monster 62.5lb entry.

The village hall looked as delightful as ever with colourful floral entries, lots of splendid fruit and veg., many cookery items including 17 chocolate cakes and a great selection of children's entries.

Roy Slade's produce stall did good business and there was a lot of chat over tea.

It was the first chance for many villagers to get together after the summer break so the Show proved a popular social event.

Vic Davis was the auctioneer at the end of the afternoon and managed - very successfully! - to cajole everyone into parting with their cash.

The total raised for the village hall was £300 so many thanks to the organisers and all who took part.
