• FOLLOWING the first successful ‘Scattering of Scarecrows’ in 2007 a second scattering recently took place in conjunction with this year’s St Martin's Church Open Gardens event.

This time there was the added incentive of a Broadmayne Scarecrow Cup being awarded for the best scarecrow, judged by children who took the scarecrow trail.

Residents and visitors alike were presented with over 70 fun and imaginative scarecrows scattered the length and breadth of the village and the winner of the cup was judged to be Hollie and Zoe Cochrane’s lifelike motorbike rider complete with bike.

Thanks must go to Pat Trevethan for organising this event and a slideshow of the wonderful display of scarecrows can be seen at www.broadmaynescarecrows.yolasite.com.

During the weekend, Broadmayne and West Knighton WI raised £76 from teas provided in the village hall which will be divided between WI funds and the church and I understand that £1000 was raised over the whole weekend.

  • AT their last meeting, Broadmayne and West Knighton WI enjoyed a musical evening when Gordon Bartlett talked on ‘Music in every Home’ He produced a comprehensive selection of musical boxes from his collection, dating from 1865 to the 1920s, all in working order, together with a model of Nipper the dog which featured in all HMV adverts.

Music ranged from La Donna e Mobile, Sophie Tucker singing ‘I don’t want to be thin’ and the Radetsky March to Fats Waller.

Mr Bartlett was thanked by Moira Dickerson on behalf of members.

The flower competition brought a colourful display of blooms and was won by Inge Hagon with her mothers day rose and Betty Jowett was congratulated on completing the Race for Life at Kingston Maurward.

Four members served teas at the Women’s Land Army reunion at Kingston Maurward which was arranged at very short notice, but a very busy and enjoyable afternoon ensued.

Members were told of the death of Kathleen Bentley who had been a member of the WI for many years.

At the next meeting, Alan Brown will be talking about ‘Lesser Known Dorset Churches’.
