First Aid for the Pacific

3:24pm Tuesday 26th January 2010

CHILDREN of Fiji directors, Margaret and Peter Long, came up with a novel idea for their recent coffee morning. Instead of asking for a fixed entry fee, they invited visitors to select and ‘buy’ an item to go towards making up a first aid box for a school in Fiji.

People chose from a range of basic items, such as bandages, antiseptic cream, eye wash, plasters, antibacterial hand gel or lint. At the end of the morning there were 7 full boxes ready to deliver to schools and kindergartens, where at present there is no way of treating minor accidents or infections.

The boxes will be personally delivered to schools and kindergartens in Fiji next month.

Margaret and Peter would like to thank all who turned up for the coffee morning, which raised almost £200 in total.

Merrily Harpur, author of ‘Roaring Dorset’ will be talking to members about sightings of big cats.

The meeting takes place in the Savill Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday, February 4. Visitors will be most welcome to come along.

Evening performances are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7.30pm. Matinee performances are on Wednesday and Saturday at 2.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for children and concessions. They are available at the newsagent’s or The Stores in Maiden Newton, or by contacting Cherri Dyke (01300 320888) or Jack Hayward (01300 320713) This is always a very popular event and you are advised to buy your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

The tardis-like corrugated iron building reveals an inside clad with timber, creating ideal acoustics for any live performance.

A capacity of 200 gives performers and audience a chance to feel part of the intimate atmosphere the hall creates.

All bands put on by the BAND-ON committee are accompanied by a licensed bar serving draught real ale, draught lager, scrumpy, a range of wines, spirits and soft drinks.

The next performance at Evershot Village Hall will be Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou’s ‘Can’t wait for Spring’ tour along with the Lantern Players on Saturday, February 20. Trevor and Hannah are a husband and wife duo, who are promoting the release of the new folk album of the year. They will be bringing along for company a handpicked selection of the best players from their famous London folk club, The Lantern Society.

Doors open at 8.00pm.Tickets cost £5 in advance and can be bought through www.wegottickets.com/lantern or from Evershot Village Stores. Limited tickets will be available on the door at £6.

There will be a good old sing-song, including fun songs, old songs, popular songs, in fact any kind of song.

Volunteers are needed to entertain, so please come along and play the keyboard/the Hammond organ or bring along your own instrument.

If that is not your scene, please bring along a favourite piece of music on CD or tape. Maybe you can sing, do a turn or give a monologue?

There will be a Dorset best bar to lubricate the vocal chords and refreshments to keep everyone going throughout the evening.

There is no door fee, but donations are requested towards the rewiring of the hall.

Volunteers should book with Teresa on 01935 83410, Muriel on 01935 83593 or Annette on 01935 83659.
