A CHURCH in Sherborne has announced its support for a centre offering work-based activities to disabled adults.

Cheap Street Church will donate funds to The Green Shed as part of the 'Community and Wider World' project.

As part of the project, members of the church chose one local cause and one worldwide organisation to support.

The Green Shed is based at the rear of Castle Gardens and offers the chance for adults with learning disabilities to make items out of recycled wood, which are subsequently sold at the garden centre.

Barbara Porter, chairman of the project, said: "It is a pleasure to be embarking on this new relationship with The Green Shed, which is such a valuable resource for adults with learning difficulties in our local community.

"We are looking forward to organising events and raising money for such a fantastic cause, as well as raising awareness of this wonderful local initiative."

Barbara and other church members visited The Green Shed for a tour after donating an initial sum to the cause.

They were able to see some of the work that is undertaken at the centre and had the chance to meet a number of the service users.

Barry Watts, co-ordinator of The Green Shed, said: "It’s such wonderful news that The Green Shed has been chosen to receive donations from Cheap Street Church and I am extremely grateful for the kind donation that has already been made.

"I am really looking forward to building our relationship with the members of the church and showing them how the money will be utilised for the benefit of our users and the wider community."

The Green Shed opened in October 2010 and is now open four days a week for service users to take part in the centre's community projects.

It will receive regular donations from the church over the next three years.
