DORSET churches held a successful display of eco lessons and bell ringing at the county show last weekend.

As visitors flocked to the Dorchester Showground for the 175th year to feast on the produce and marvel at the livestock, they were able to take a welcome respite at the church marquee.

Despite Saturday's downpour, hundreds came by to enjoy the church marquee, organised by Margaret Morrissey and Rev Jean Coates each year on behalf of Dorset churches.

Margaret Morrissey, editor of Dorchester Benefice Magazine, said: "We have a theme each year and this year's theme was eco church. We had a 'living church yard', displays on how to make your church eco friendly, and demonstration solar panels that the children could use to make a windmill spin.

"The church marquee is not a high profile attraction at the show but it is something people have come to recognise as somewhere they can have a rest and talk while the children play."

As Sunday brought with it the sunshine, the Bishop of Salisbury was also in attendance.

Margaret said: "We had a bell simulator at the marquee, which everyone was absolutely fascinated by.

"It just so happened to coincide with the day the Bishop of Salisbury attended the show, which was the same day the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers released a statement about about struggling to find new recruits."

The Bishop Reverend Nicholas Holtham, who is a patron of the council of bell ringers, used the bell simulator to try his hand at the centuries old craft and inspire many to to consider signing up.

Margaret added: "Everyone really enjoys our displays as it is somewhere they can come and keep the children entertained for fifteen minutes and not spend any money, which is good when you're at an expensive show.

"Over all it was a big success. The show has an incredible atmosphere, it is like a bid Dorset family."
