Margaret and Peter Long of Cattistock are thanked by Jitendra Chand, leader of the Surya Baal Ramayan Mandali Youth Group in Fiji Margaret and Peter Long of Cattistock are thanked by Jitendra Chand, leader of the Surya Baal Ramayan Mandali Youth Group in Fiji

WE ARE sending this article from Fiji, where we are continuing with our charity work to help children throughout the islands.

So far we have concentrated on the main island, but have plans to visit some of the smaller islands soon. Already we have visited the Fiji School for the Blind with talking books, so that the children there can have access to the same books that sighted children regularly enjoy, and taken large quantities of science equipment (donated by Dorchester Middle School) to a school on the outskirts of Suva.

We have also spent time with a Hindi Youth Group, where we donated musical instruments, including a Bina harmonium, a dholak, a set of jhanj, a kartaal and some tambourines.

  • YOU ARE invited to an Evening at Chantmarle Manor on Friday 23 October in aid of the church of St Basil in Toller Fratrum.

The parish church of St Basil is of unique historical importance and has been serving the district for many centuries.

In order to keep the church open, in good order and continuing to serve the local district in these financially straitened times for the Church of England, a group of ‘Friends’ was set up for the purpose of easing the burden and is now a Registered Charity.

From time to time, and as energies allow, they organise fund raising events for repairs and renovation works.

As examples of their fund raising, in recent years they have paid for the repair and complete re-covering of the roof, re-wiring of the building and so on. As always, more needs to be done.

By kind permission of Mr John Glare, they have arranged for an evening at Chantmarle Manor, nearby in Dorset, to enjoy an illustrated talk on ‘Dorset Curiosities’ by Mr Rob Curtis, who gives marvellous lectures.

Tickets will be on sale in the locality in early October, and although the numbers available are limited, it is hoped that a substantial sum will be raised for the continuing maintenance of the church building
