CERNE ABBAS

HISTORICAL Society: Max Gate, designed by Thomas Hardy, who lived there from 1885 until his death in 1928, is the venue of choice for the society’s next outing.
Max Gate lies between Dorchester and Puddletown, everyone is asked to be there for a 2:30pm start.
There will be a guided tour, followed by tea.
The cost is £ 4, except for National Trust members who receive free entry, plus £ 3 for tea.

  • A PICNIC is to be held on Sunday, July 29 at the Vicarage.
    This is preceded by the fifth Sunday benefice service at 11am in St.Mary’s Church.
    There will be singing by benefice choir members and everyone is invited to the Vicarage afterwards.
    Please bring a picnic lunch and drinks to share and enjoy the garden – table and chairs will be provided.

 

  • OPEN Gardens: Braving a weather-wise poor Saturday and basking in perfect Sunday weather, more than a thousand visitors enjoyed the Open Gardens Scheme this year.
    Admirers came from as far as Wells, Bishop’s Waltham and Bournemouth.
    Approximately 28 gardens were open, the plant stalls extremely busy and the tea sales even busier!
    Nearly £ 6,000 were raised, a tidy increase from last year.
    Thanks go to everyone who made this event a success once again, proceeds will be divided between Julia’s House Hospice and the Cerne Historical Society.

 

  • BIG Africa Cycle: Peter Gostelow will be sharing his adventures with everyone on Saturday, July 28 at 7:30pm.

 

  • He cycled from Godmanstone to Cape Town on his own, through thirty countries, completely self-supportive!
  • Peter covered over 20,000 miles and raised an amazing £ 13,000 for the Against Malaria Foundation.
    Come and listen to his no doubt mesmerising account, tickets are £ 5 on the door or are available from Cerne Abbas Stores in advance. GODMANSTONE

     

  • VILLAGE fete: The annual village fete will take place on Saturday, July 28 at Manor Farm.
    It opens at 2pm and is not only a popular event but an important fundraiser for the village.

  • ANNUAL service: the hamlet of Up Cerne is holding its annual church service once again, this year on Sunday, August 5 at 6pm.
    Do come, celebrate and enjoy this intimate church which is only open to the public once a year.
    You may like to join everyone at Up Cerne Manor for refreshments afterwards.

  • SYDLING Singers are welcoming new members!
    Do you enjoy singing and are looking for a friendly group of like minded people?
    Sydling Singers cover popular songs as well as musicals, folk and gospel.
    The cost is £ 4 per session, they meet in Sydling Village Hall every other Wednesday between 7:30pm – 8:30pm.

     

  • GLEE Club South is a singing and dancing group for children and teenagers aged 10 – 17 years.
    Glee Club South meets in the Village Hall every Friday, between 4:30pm – 5:30pm.
    Everyone of the above age group is welcome, the cost is £ 5 per session.

    Jeremy Collins has acted as Treasurer for the past seven years and is happy to talk to anyone who may want to fill this role.
    It involves around three to four hours a month, maintaining computerised accounts, issuing invoices and similar tasks.
