• A recent two day exhibition in the Mission Hall entitled Painting for Pleasure was a marvellous showcase for the artistic talents of a group of local ladies. The title might have been meant to apply to the ladies themselves who obviously enjoy their painting, but the varied pictures on display were certainly a pleasure to behold. Pat Bellis, Pat Haine, Judy Backwell, Dot Emblen, Judy Willis, Maureen Morris, Pat Dawson-Harris, Maureen Crib, Sara Knight, Caroline Crisp, Evelyn Donnelly, Linda Walsh, Barbara Harrison, Inger Barnes, Anne and Elaine all had reason to be proud of their interpretation of a wide range of subjects and styles - still life, village scenes, acrylic, botanical and much more. There even were monkeys in charcoal and close up of a cow, bravely produced by Anne, which made me laugh out loud. With tea and homemade cakes to enjoy this really was an afternoon to savour. The group meet in the Mission Hall every Friday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm. Every fourth week a guest artist attends. If you would like to know more, give Judy a call (833349).

 • David Mannings reports that he attended a First Bus Users Committee meeting recently, having asked for an item to be put on the agenda referring to the bus service – or rather the lack of it - down Oakbury Drive. David suggested to Mark Williams, the local First manager and the two management representatives from Portsmouth that perhaps one bus an hour, on the hour, could run down Oakbury Drive. A response to his suggestion was promised at the next Users forum meeting on Wednesday 10 July.

 • Local Preston youngster, 19 year old George Bell, is a merchant seaman cadet in training, which involves a mixture of University courses at Warsash Academy near Southampton and time spent at sea. He is presently two weeks into an eight week period on a ship working out of Aberdeen, servicing oil rigs in the North Sea. On finding an exercise bike on the ship’s bridge he decided to raise some money for a charity close to his heart, Breast Cancer Care. Calculating that it is about 1000km from Aberdeen to his home at Preston, he is inviting sponsorship to cycle that distance in his spare time on the boat. The picture shows him hard at work, with the North Sea visible through the bridge window! So far he has covered over 200km, a distance equivalent to leaving Aberdeen and travelling through Dundee, Perth and Stirling. He is now, virtually, on his way to Glasgow! If you would like to help speed his progress ‘home’ and help a very good cause with a donation, go to https://www.justgiving.com/George-Bell/ or text GCFB 93, with an amount, to 70070.
