Summer Reading Challenge

Summer holidays are very near to hand and the problem of what you can do to keep the kids occupied faces all parents.

Dorset libraries are, as usual, running the summer reading challenge for children. This year the theme is Circus Stars.

The Circus Stars pack includes a pop up stage, (easily assembled without scissors or glue) to which stickers are added (some scratch and sniff) to create their own Circus Stars performance.

When the children complete the reading challenge they will be presented with a medal and a certificate.

A website has also been set up (www.circus-stars.org.uk) offering a range of activities and tasks to help extend the reading experience for older children and opens up a wide range of reader development activities to enjoy throughout the summer.

The meeting of Dorset Council on 20th June still didn’t reach a resolution about the future of our library.

The decision has been deferred until their next meeting on July 21. I’m sure we all want to keep our library open. Closure means awkward journeys into town to borrow books and our children will no longer be able to just ‘nip’ down the library to get help with their homework or studies.

The other 19 libraries currently under threat face exactly the same problems if they close.

If you still want to help save ours from the threat of closure then please write to your Dorset County Councillor (names and addresses can be found on the dorsetforyou website or at the library) Or send your letters to the council leader Mr Campbell, Preston Hill Farm, Iwerne Minster Blandford, DT11 8NL.

Time is running out, we must save our library from closure!

A big thank you goes to Valerie Bright for knitting woolly hats for our troops in Afghanistan.

Her son is on tour there and she knits loads of hats for him to take over for the winter tour of duty to keep warm.

If you have any spare wool lying around it can be donated to this excellent cause, just drop it into the hardware shop where Brian will gladly pass it on so Valerie can keep on knitting!

Valerie is also knitting poppies for this Novembers poppy appeal and she need small black buttons. If you have any of these to spare then please take them to the hardware store.
