Plant a tree in National Tree Week.

It’s National Tree Week commencing the 26th November and the Wildlife Trust along with the Dorset Countryside Service is hoping to plant 500 native trees on the strip of land around Horselynch Plantation.

Local schools have already been contacted to get the kids involved but if you want to lend a hand then there will be a community tree planting day on Sat 3rd December between 10am and 3pm when you can just turn up and get digging.

All trees, tree protection, gloves and tools will be provided and no experience is necessary as staff will be on hand to help.

The plan is to extend the area of existing woodland and ensure there are mature trees available to wildlife once the existing plantation trees become old.

The land is currently owned and managed by Dorset County Council but Dorset Wildlife Trust will be taking on the management of the land in about two years.

The Horselynch Plantation will be managed as an extension of the Lorton Meadows reserve, maintaining public access and ensuring wildlife habitats are protected in the future.

Congratulations to Tyler Everitt who won the name the book bear competition at the library. The winning name, Benny was drawn from a hat by the St Francis Café team. Tyler won a prize of a book.

A big thank you to John Tomblin who gave an illustrated talk on Green Living in October. Those who went all commented on how much they enjoyed the very informative and thought provoking presentation.

I know the library is now safe from the threat of closure but it seems that the amount of people borrowing books is falling dramatically. If the readership trend keeps going down then I’m afraid if ever more cuts are necessary then we will be back at square one and fighting to keep the library open. So please do keep on using it, we all know it is a vital part of the Littlemoor community and an amenity to be proud of.

Both the Littlemoor reading and creative writing groups are very popular but the times of their meetings are not always convenient for everybody.

With this in mind both groups would like to extend their sessions to the evenings so that everyone can join if they wish. An after school reading group for our younger residents is also proposed. And if there are any budding young authors out there who would like to start up their own writing group then we’d love to hear from them.

Both groups are great fun and informal and add to the enjoyment we get from books as well as being a good way to meet new friends.

If you fancy either of these then please get in contact with the library (812350) or Jess (813863) or myself (834503) for more information.

A quick reminder that the Littlemoor Live website is there for all to use but not everyone is taking advantage of the site.

If you can’t spare the time to get to community meetings then this website is the ideal place for you to post your ideas or air your views on everything Littlemoor.

Or you can simply have a chat with other residents, exchange points of view, put up photographs of the area we live in. Go to www.littlemoorlive.com and join up today!
