AMIDST all this glorious sunshine it is now hard to believe that Martinstown WI had a dull, cloudy day for their outing to Minehead. At least it did not rain.

Once again Eileen Brotherton is to be congratulated on organising a truly memorable day for members and friends, and all those regular supporters who make it viable.

Needless to say a short business meeting was on the agenda along with passing out the County Newsletter.

Naturally words cannot express our thanks to Eileen, not only for this year’s outing, but also all those she has arranged in the past. Already one is in the pipeline for 2011, but after that she says someone else can take over.

THE recent Cancer Care Tea Party proved to be another successful fundraising occasion and a chance to meet up with friends.

Thanks to all those stallholders with such a lovely selection of handicrafts and cards plus a truly mammoth book stall doing a roaring trade. Good to know that people still make time to read.

Dennis also held another of his social evenings in the village hall, which raised money for Cancer Care too.

RECENTLY Dudley thought he had been taken back in time with the shock of seeing a convoy of army lorries and jeeps trundling past his front door.

Normally nothing heavier than a double-decker bus or led astray sat nav lorries. It seems they were on their way to take part in the Dorchester Carnival before supporting the WW2 event in Maiden Newton.

Well they say an army marches on its stomach, which made Martinstown a pit stop, which accounted for the parked vehicles that stretched from the west end of the village to the crowded village green and all the way up the road to Steven’s Farm Shop. What a bonus for the coffee parlour and the Brewers Arms as well as the Blandchard Trust barbecue.

THE next meeting of the Martinstown WI will be in the village hall on Wednesday, July 14, 6.30pm.

The speaker will be Chris Shaw on her travels to ‘Sugar Island’, namely that of Castro’s Cuba.

Visitors welcome to come along at 7pm.
