• THE Martinstown Cricket Club would like to thank all who came along to support their fundraising jumble sale. Naturally their sensible provision of refreshments ensured that it became much more of a social occasion and a chance to catch up on news of friends.

Hopefully this well supported event will have boosted the finances of the MCC and allow them to put ball to willow for many years to come.

Budding cricketers should contact John O’Brien or Lee House 07966 504806 for their could well be winter nets practice soon.

  • THE Martinstown WI always provides a book stall at every meeting, which naturally as a brisk turnover, but as well as this benefit there are also two flourishing Book Clubs (the Afternoon and Evening book club), which have the support of our Library service, for which thanks are due.

The recent WI meeting provided a marvellous insight into family history when members “Met the Ancestors.”

Memory joggers were as diverse as Sheila’s Nigerian salt containers in the shape of animals made from goat skin to a Canadian family tree of descent from a Gibson who had emigrated there when there was a great need for scientists.

Monica flourished a sword dated from 1157-1199, which was a replica of the one used by the famous Richard the Lionheart, whilst Margaret H quoted entries from her mother’s wartime diary, which mentioned barbed wire beaches and air raids on Liverpool for she had been sent to North Wales to be safe from London air raids. These were just a few of the items brought to the meeting.

  • GERLADINE Canniford would like to thank everyone who supported her recent coffee morning. Also, anyone wishing to help with the Samaritans Shoebox Appeal for Children should contact her at 1 Manor Grove.
