WATCH out Secret Squirrel, the Super Squirrels are here!

The Squirrels class at Milborne St Andrew First School have been busy squirreling away with their teacher Mrs Andrews to raise funds for a special mission.

Dorset Wildlife Trust are running an ‘Adopt a Red Squirrel’ project on Brownsea Island, so the children decided they would like to join in and adopt their own red squirrel.

But how to raise the money?

It was decided that the best plan was to open a café at the school one morning and invite the parents to come along for coffee and cakes.

They planned their mission carefully – baking cakes and biscuits, making menus, drawing posters to advertise their café and even printing out invitations.

And all their hard work paid off, because the parents came and had a lovely time.

The children did all the waiting at tables, writing down the orders and serving them, then working out the money and taking the payments.

It was a great idea and a most enjoyable way to start the school day, instead of just dropping the children and dashing off we all had a chance to sit and chat to each other over coffee and some very nice cakes.

Plus the very good news was that they raised far more money than they needed – they could easily afford to adopt their squirrel - but what to do with the money left over?

So the question was put to the children – what would they like to spend their extra income on?

Sweets maybe, or some chocolate for each of them?

After some thought the children came up with an exellent plan – why not put the money back into buying more cake and biscuit ingredients, bake them up and then run another café and raise more money so they could either adopt another red squirrel or take a trip to Brownsea Island to see their squirrel!

Simple really when you think about it, isn’t it?
