Celebrate harvest with St. Osmund

HARVEST thanksgiving in St. Osmund’s church this year is on Sunday, September 27, at 11.15am. Members of the flower group will be in the church from 10.00am on Saturday, 26 to receive any gifts of produce or non-perishable provisions for display in the church and later distribution. All will be gratefully appreciated.

Following the service, there will be a harvest lunch in the village hall at 12.30 for 1pm, to which everyone is cordially invited - not just the church congregation, but all and sundry, of all denominations or none. The cost is £5.00 (£3.00 for children under 14), for a home-cooked meal featuring local produce.

Tickets are obtainable from Mary Kempe at The Beehive, Osmington (01305 834095), Hilary Ballard, Beech Cottage, Church Lane (01305 832168), or from the office at St. Andrews’ Church Rooms, Preston - sales must close on Monday, September 21, to allow catering numbers to be finalised (please say if you are a vegetarian when getting your ticket). Soft drinks will be available - bring your own wine or beer.

• GOOD news for music lovers! The end of summer brings the start of a new season from the Osmington Recorded Music Society, with a series of sixteen recitals, starting on Monday, October 5 with a return visit from the Society’s President, John Davis, who is also President of the Torbay Recorded Music Society, and is prominent in both the Sibelius Society and the Stokowski Society. His programme is entitled “Peripatetic Portfolios” and will illustrate his life-time of travels in pursuit of music.

  On October 19, the society’s chairman, Brian Bishop, will present “Romeo and Juliet Revisited”, showing how Shakespeare’s great love tragedy has inspired numerous composers, some of whom may be new to his audience. November 2 sees a visit from Mike Harley of Bournemouth Gramophone Society, with a programme on the composer Granville Bantock.

  Also returning during the season will be Peter Foster from Dorchester Hospital Radio, in a programme outlining the history of music broadcasting, Richard Searle from Dorchester U3A, who will feature the music of Mendelssohn, and Betty Roberts with Geoff Stokes from Wimborne Recorded Music Society. Other programmes will cover subjects such as “Sullivan without Gilbert”, and a talk by one of our own members, a professional bassoonist, about his chosen instrument, with musical illustrations.

  The Society was founded in October 2008 as an opportunity for members to enjoy great music in the company of like-minded individuals. High quality sound equipment is used throughout. Fortnightly meetings start at 2.15 pm on Mondays in Osmington Village Hall, and last for about two hours. Refreshments are included in the admission price.

  • BECAUSE the accounts could not be formally accepted at the AGM in June, there will be an extraordinary general meeting of the Osmington Village Hall charity at 7.30pm on Thursday, 1 October in the Constable room for the presentation and acceptance of the 2008 annual accounts. This meeting is open to the public.
