The latest fashions come to Osmington

THE highlight of the ladies evening held in the village hall on November 14 was an hour-long fashion show by kind courtesy of The Dressing Room in Dorchester.

The evening opened with everyone getting to know each other over a glass of wine and with an opportunity to buy fashion accessories and Christmas gifts. To get everyone into a “Fashion” frame of mind a fashion-based quiz took place - did you know that King Louis XIV of France introduced high-heeled shoes to the world of fashion? Ruth Lane and her team won the quiz.

Fashions formal and casual and to suit all age groups came down the catwalk, and the finale featured the shop’s owner Elaine singing during the showing of the evening wear section. The whole evening was greatly enjoyed by all and raised more than £200 towards St. Osmund’s church funds. A very big thank you is owed to Elaine, Jean and all of the models, as well as thanks and congratulations to Marjorie, Hilary and all those who helped to organise the event.

  • FOLLOWING the update given at the Osmington Society’s AGM, the community plan project is now moving forward into its next stage. The initial computer analysis of the responses to the survey questionnaire is complete, and now needs to be studied in more depth to draw definitive conclusions from it. To this end, five small analysis groups are being recruited, to look at five separate subject areas:

• The welfare of our youth - based primarily on responses to the separate youth section of the questionnaire.

• The local economy and self-help initiatives - growing food, community shopping, getting about.

• Energy conservation and recycling - saving energy, recycling, local environment.

• Social fabric - community buildings, local communication, social activities.

• Protecting neighbours and ourselves - neighbourliness, local crime, planning for emergencies.

A number of people have already volunteered to help in the overall project, but this is an extra opportunity for any others, who would like to be involved with a particular aspect of community development, to join a small working group on their specific interest area. If you would like to be one, contact Geoff Codd on 832247 or e-mail Geoff@InterChange.eclipse.co.uk.

  • OSMINGTON Recorded Music Society continues its second season with a series of ten recitals starting on Monday, January 4 at 2.15pm in the village hall. Programmes will include one featuring the bassoon, given by one of the society’s members, Laurence Knight, a professional bassoonist and former member of the Sadlers Wells orchestra. Other programmes will include presentations given by visitors from similar societies in Wimborne and Shaftesbury. Peter Foster of Dorchester Hospital Radio will be talking about the history of music broadcasting, and, in April, Gilbert Satterthwaite, a personal friend of the chairman, will be talking about Sir Arthur Sullivan and music he wrote apart from his collaboration with WS Gilbert.

For more information, call Brian Bishop on 833225, or e.mail blbishop@waitrose.com.

  • ARE you getting anxious about your electricity bill? Would you like to find out where you might cut back without loss of comfort or convenience? Mary Kempe has an electricity monitor which she can lend to anyone within Osmington parish who wants to do a check on how they use electricity. It is very easy to fit and to use - Mary says that if she can do it you can!

Also, copies of “The Transition Handbook - from oil dependency to local resilience” by Rob Hopkins and “The Transition Timeline” by Shaun Chamberlin are available to borrow. Both books are full of ideas for a more sustainable future and some creative thinking on how to get there!

Anyone interested, give Mary a ring on 834095.

  • Urgently wanted - someone to take over the job of Booking Secretary for the village hall from Tracey, who is finding it hard to fit in with increasing business and family commitments. Though no special skill is required, the task of keeping the hall programme organised is an absolutely vital one. If you are usually accessible by phone and e-mail, would like to be involved in village affairs, and can spare the odd hour or two, please give it some thought. If you might be interested, and want to find out more, contact Tracey Reed (832687, or e-mail treed855@aol.com), the hall chairman Sandy Jordan (835876, santiques1@yahoo.com), or any of the village hall trustees.
