IF you are quick, you may still just be able to get tickets to see and hear the Sunset Café Stompers in the village hall on Saturday, March 13. They have been selling fast. Their previous concerts in Osmington have been sold out, and there is every reason to believe that this one will be, too.

The Stompers are a highly talented group playing New Orleans jazz, blues and ragtime, who have built up a well-deserved reputation throughout the county and beyond. Their return to Osmington is a fantastic chance for residents to experience a great performance on their own doorstep, but there is always a great demand for tickets from outside the parish, so hurry! The music starts from about 8pm, the doors & bar will be open from 7.30, and hot snack refreshments will be on sale.

Tickets cost £8, from Keith Pratt at Buttress Cottage, Church Lane (01305 833847). All the profits will go to the funds for maintenance and improvement of Osmington Village Hall - so enjoy the music while contributing to a very worthy cause.

  • OSMINGTON’S recorded music society continues with good attendances, despite the vagaries of our climate, and the assorted ailments of some members. January’s programmes ended with Laurence Knight’s recital on the subject of the bassoon, on which he was well qualified to speak, having been a professional bassoonist with Sadlers Wells, among other orchestras,. Laurence demonstrated the different sounds of the modern bassoon and the earlier design, examples of both of which he brought with him, with members eager to have the instruments explained to them during the interval.

February began with the society’s treasurer Michael Hart taking the stand with a programme inspired by personal memories and associations. Warlock and Walton were followed by Dvorak, Vivaldi , Brahms and Beethoven – a glorious feast of music. Later in February, the society’s Vice-Chairman, David McCririck was due to bring us his programme “Crowns and Coronets”.

There will be three programmes in March. On Monday, March 1 the presenters are two members of the Wimborne Recorded Music Society, and on March 15 Peter Foster of Dorchester Hospital Radio will present a programme on the history of music broadcasting. On March 29, members will be joined by Joan and Geoff Linton of Shaftesbury Music for Enjoyment group with “A Mediterranean Saga”.

Meetings start at 2.15pm on alternate Mondays and last for about two hours - refreshments are included. For more information call Brian Bishop on 833225, or e-mail blbishop@waitrose.com.

  • PALM Sunday, on March 28, is being celebrated in St. Osmund’s church by an evening “Songs of Praise” service at 6.30pm, in place of the usual 11am service. All and sundry are invited to come and help to fill the church with the joyful sound of some favourite hymn tunes.
