THIS year’s harvest thanksgiving service in St. Osmund’s is on Sunday, September 26 at 11am. Members of the Flower Group will be in the church from 10am on Saturday 25 to receive any gifts of produce or non-perishable provisions for display in the church and later distribution. All will be gratefully appreciated.
Following the service, there will be a harvest lunch in the Village Hall at 12.30 for 1pm, to which everyone is cordially invited - not just the church congregation, but all and sundry, of all denominations or none. The cost will be £5.00 (£3.00 for children under 14), for a home-cooked meal featuring local produce. Tickets are obtainable from Betty Abbott at Cosy Cottage, Osmington (Tel: 834095), from the office at St. Andrews’ Church Rooms or by contacting Pam Kaile (751600, davepamkaile@talktalk.net). Numbers are limited to 50, and sales must close on Monday, September 20, to allow catering numbers to be finalised (Please say if you are a vegetarian when getting your ticket). Soft drinks will be available - bring your own wine or beer. Volunteers are needed to produce puddings (fruit pies and crumbles) - If you can help by donating one, please contact Pam Kaile (see above)
There will be a longer season this year, with nineteen programmes instead of sixteen - with no rise in the annual subscription! The final recital will be at the AGM on 23 May 2011.
The season includes a number of “firsts”. A reciprocal arrangement with the Weymouth Classical RMS allows an exchange of presenters - beginning with a visit from Weymouth’s Basil Devenish-Meares, with an orchestral concert of complete works. Other first-timers will include visitors from Bridport and Wimborne Recorded Music Societies, and Geraldine Morgan who, having strong connections with St David’s Cathedral, will present “A St David’s Celebration”. There will also be a visit from Jim Davis, a Radio Ridgeway presenter and current deputy chairman of Weymouth CRMS, while Peter Foster will be interviewing a mystery guest as a castaway on “Coral Island Classics” - our version of “Desert Island Discs”. Gilbert Satterthwaite will be returning with “Music of the Spheres”, inspired by his background as a professional astronomer. Also returning will be Richard Searle of Dorchester U3A and Joan and Geoff Linton from Shaftesbury Music For Enjoyment Club.
The rest of the programmes will be “in-house” productions, and a “Bring-a-Disc” programme where all members can contribute with ten minutes or so of their own choice of music.
Meetings start at 2.15pm and last about two hours. New members will be warmly welcomed and, to tempt anyone thinking about joining the Society but as yet uncertain, for this first programme only, anyone visiting the Society for the first time will be able to do so free of charge.
