Royal Recogniton for the White Horse

Oamington’s White Horse Restoration Project will receive recognition at the highest level with a Royal visit this spring. There has been official confirmation that the Princess Royal will visit the site on Monday, March 12 to “unveil” the restored monument. Most of the details of the visit have yet to be worked out, but it will probably take place between 9.45 and 10.30am. This will be a well-deserved tribute to all the local people who have worked so hard over the last two years and more to bring the monument back to its original condition in time for the Olympics year, and it seems fitting that King George III’s resuscitation should be greeted by one of his direct descendents with her own distinguished equestrian background.

OSMINGTON is the latest local community to have completed its contribution to the 2012 Olympic scene on time and within budget. When the hillside figure of George III on his white horse was first carved in 1808, its position was chosen to present a distinctive landmark to seafarers approaching Weymouth Bay. Now, after 200 years, and thanks to the efforts of a dedicated project team, it is set to present the same image to the Olympic seafarers of 2012.

Thanks to the energy and commitment of some of the fantastic young people of Dorset, great progress has been made with the final stage of restoration of the Osmington White Horse – a project that is now coming to fruition after two years of planning and preparation by a range of cooperating organisations.

Choirs to sing at St. Osmund's

ST. OSMUND’S church will be holding its annual Patronal Festival on Sunday, July 10, with choral evensong at 6.30pm, followed as usual by a social gathering with refreshments. The choir from All Saints, Wyke Regis will be joining the choirs from our own benefice to lead the singing, and the visiting preacher will be the Reverend Deb Smith, Vicar of All Saints.

The village hall stomps again

On Saturday, March 12, the Sunset Café Stompers made a very welcome return to the village hall for an evening of their foot-tapping New Orleans Jazz. With a full house, the hall was suitably decorated for a jazz party atmosphere. Whether listening or dancing, a packed and enthusiastic audience were entertained by this popular band, whilst the bar and hot snacks provided welcome refreshment.

THE next stage of the White Horse restoration should soon be under way. In February, representatives of all the authorities and groups involved in the restoration project came together for a workshop day in Osmington Village Hall to plan the next move – establishing and marking the exact outline of the original carving.

AFTER its recent (expensive) redecoration, the village hall looks great. Sadly, though, the Valentine’s dance had to be cancelled because too few people bought tickets to make it financially viable. This was the third recent event to fail in this way.

You should already have got your tickets for this year’s Strictly Come Valentine event in the village hall on Saturday, February 12 from 7.30 to 11pm. If not, act now!! The theme is “Dancing through the Ages”, with a great variety of music, dancing, drinking and general jollity, including a professional dance demonstration. There will, naturally, be a bar and hot snacks will be on hand. Come and dance the evening away to the Pegasus disco.

The White Horse sheds its coat

THE valley below White Horse Hill was filled with a virtually continuous buzzing all day on Thursday, November 18, and for most of the following morning, as a busy helicopter ferried the last of Anneke Rice’s limestone chips (and those of her predecessors) from the monument to a dumping site across the valley, whence they will be recycled to other uses.

LOCAL artist, Naomi Vincent organised a highly successful arts and crafts event in Osmington Village Hall on October 16. Local artists and craft specialists joined together for a one day exhibition and sale of beautiful handmade jewellery, sculpture and woodwork, along with The Hardy Quilters’ splendid display of quilts and garments.
