ISLAND Garden Nurseries was the venue for the Garden Club's summer barbecue, the last event of the 2007/8 programme. Despite weather that felt as though we should be celebrating Halloween it was a great success with good food, friends and wine.

BOTH churches were looking splendid, all the gardens looking at their best ready for opening on Sunday morning and then the rains came; not only rain but extremely strong winds as well.

I wrote recently about the Open Gardens in Portesham on July 6, there is now 50% extra value! Another garden has been added, not on the same scale as Portesham House or Nethergrove House but still full of interest, ideas and fun and has recently been awarded a plaque from the Dorset Wildlife Trust as a Wildlife Friendly Garden'.

Most people in the village are aware of the Village Café, which takes place on alternate Saturday mornings in the hall; Saturday, 14 June the Village Hall Committee will be running the café with a special theme of Portesham Showcase with a wide range of hobbies and crafts on display.

There will be a public meeting on Wednesday 23rd April in Portesham Village Hall at 7.30pm about a subject important to everyone living in the villages, the closure of rural Post Offices. There will be information and advice from Dorset Community Action, Dorset County Council, Postwatch and the West Dorset District Council. You are asked to come and be counted!' Chesil Bank Gardening Club's April meeting will be held at Upwey Garden Nursery for a hanging basket demonstration on Tuesday 22nd April. Please note that the time is 7.00pm, not as listed in The Chesil Magazine, you are also warned to wrap up warm.
