CRAFTY CHRISTMAS TEA PARTY was packed in the village hall recently with Father Christmas in attendance to tell the children a story.
There were many different stalls to encourage people to part with their money including tempting and delicious homemade sweets, cakes, preserves and produce and also toys, a tombola with a difference, and “Christmassy” raffle prizes piled up ready for winning, plus tea and cakes for relaxing to rest the feet after wandering round.
There was a competition for the best homemade Christmas card and prizes went to:- 7 and under class, Millie, 8+ class, Elanya and Gill Jefferis for the adult class.
Very many thanks for all who contributed and helped to organise this event, which raised in excess of £400 for St. Peter’s Church.
Following the carol singing there will be mulled wine punch, mince pies and other refreshments to warm everyone up before setting off for home - please remember to bring a torch with you.
If interested, please contact Susie on 01305 871203.
Please bring a “supper to share” with a licensed bar available at the hall all evening and a raffle.
There are only a limited number of tickets for this event so buy as soon as possible, available from Portesham Post Office or on 01305 871392.
The date had been set some months ago at the Portesham Parish Council meeting after residents had suggested that a volunteer group be set up to do a variety of work in the village such as river bank clearing, path weeding, pond clearing and rubbish removal.
The weather made for an interesting morning with sustained gales and torrential rain but over a dozen intrepid volunteers turned up and once soaking wet, they couldn’t get any wetter!
The work and camaraderie was fun, tea and biscuits were well received and all involved were very pleased with the end results.
A large part of the most overgrown section of the fast flowing stream was cleared and the overgrown foliage on the pathway towards the doctors’ surgery and village hall was cut back.
There is much more to do around the village and there are plans to hold a volunteering morning every couple of months in the future.
Anyone from Portesham willing to volunteer to work on future dates, or wishing to add to the list of jobs to be undertaken, please contact David McKinna on 01305 871392 as all are welcome.
