New WI Craft Group proves popular

THE NEW WI Craft Group held their first meeting recently with a really good turnout of members all wishing to show off their various crafts or willing to teach others their skills.

There was an interesting array of different crafts brought along from weaving to cross stitch and two small groups formed to learn either quilting and patchwork or the art of sewing up knitted items to present a professional looking finish.

A very sociable afternoon with an overall vote to run these sessions fortnightly on a Thursday afternoon in the Ron Doble Room in the village hall from 2.30-4.00pm, the next meeting being Thursday, February 4.

  • I HAVE been asked by the Homewatch team to warn of a scam circulating in this area as follows:- “A cold calling company has been circulating Dorset residents by telephone offering to register them to prevent the householder being targeted by junk mail and telesales. They are charging £3 a month for the coming year (wanting credit card details over the phone straight away) followed by an annual charge of £10.”

Trading Standards state it is free to register with telephone and mail preference services and anyone wanting to do so should contact TPS registration line on 0845 070 0707 or email www.tpsonline.org.uk.

  • ARTSREACH is back in Portesham Village Hall again on Saturday, February 6 at 8.00pm with a group of singers and musicians “Stela” fascinated in rediscovering the cultural heritage of their region of rural Poland, and I am told an evening with Stela will take you on a musical journey from old to new which keeps the spirit of Poland at its heart.

There will also be a participatory singing workshop led by members of Stela on the afternoon of the performance in the hall and for interest or enquiries please ring 01305 269512.or find out more on www.myspace.com/stela.music Tickets for the evening performance can be obtained from Barbara Fraser on 871780 or Portesham P.O.

  • BUY YOUR tickets now for the popular and fun Fish ‘n’ Chip Supper to be held on Tuesday, February 16 in Portesham Village Hall.

The success of the “Pancake Tosser of the Year” competition last year is to be repeated and a new category is added this year in our bid to have Pancake Tossing recognised as an Olympic sport.

In addition to the speed trials there will be a class for synchronised tossing to music, “Musical Sychronised Pancake Tossing” and entrants in this class in teams of 2 or more, must provide their own music on CD.

Competitors must provide their own frying pan but pancakes will be provided and tickets are available from Liz Draper (871316) and Portesham P.O. (before February 6th when it closes) at £7.50 each.
