WELL done to St Peter’s church Portesham and Liz Draper and Di Ludlow for winning the new entry class in the Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Living Churchyard competition.

Over 70 different wildflowers, including an orchid, have been recorded by allowing areas to remain uncut for part of the year. There is also an insect hotel and plans for a bench to be provided so visitors can sit and enjoy this tranquil spot.

Liz and Di will give a short presentation at the prize giving this October and there is a board in the church giving additional details and forthcoming plans.

OVER £350 was raised at the recent coffee morning in the village hall which was hosted by St Peter’s Portesham to help raise money to replace the lead stolen from the roof of St Nicholas’ church in Abbotsbury.

There were cakes and produce stalls, a raffle and tombola and the usual bacon butties on offer, together with pastries- sweet and savoury and several different kinds of cake, including fresh cream horns and éclairs.

It was lovely to see so many people from both villages come together to support one another.

MORE cakes will be on offer this Saturday, 20 August when Portesham WI hold their cake sale in the garden of the King’s Arms pub beginning at 10am. Garden produce, jams and preserves will also be available. Should the weather be unkind then the village hall will be used.

PLEASE come and support the children of Portesham primary school on their farming float at Weymouth Carnival and Air Show on Wednesday, 17 August. The procession starts at Weymouth Pavilion at 6.30 pm and will finish at Lodmoor Coach Park, Greenhill.

Portesham Volunteers will be holding their annual village café, but with a difference, on Saturday, 27 August.

Starting earlier, at 9am, full English breakfast, served to your table, will be available to order until 10.30 am for the amazing price of only £3. Sausage, bacon baps, tea, fresh coffee, juices and cakes will be served all morning until noon.

In addition, there will be stalls selling homemade cakes, breads, jams, chutneys, local seasonal produce and plants. There will also be a bottle tombola and a grand raffle with some special gourmet prizes.

The group are raising funds for further village planting and grit bins for the winter.
