• June and Derek Stephens recently held an Open Day at their home on Preston Road to raise funds for the Emanuel Hospice in Oradea, Romania, June was delighted to have raised over £1300 which is already on its way to Romania. This was a marvellous amount to add to that already raised through the terrific generosity of June and Derek, all their friends and supporters and Weymouth Baptist Church who have worked tirelessly since 1990 to build and maintain a wonderful facility for the sick and terminally ill children and adults in this impoverished area. They all deserve our heartfelt congratulations.
• Following the article in the main Echo about unannounced changes to bus services, I checked on the new timetable for the No. 4 bus service. On weekdays and Saturdays there are still buses every 20 mins from 0720 to 17.40, then every 30 mins from 1810 to 19.10 but the last bus from town is now at 20.10. They used to continue every hour after this up to 23.10, so this is quite a cut.
• There will be an open air carol service at Sutton Poyntz tonight, Monday 17 December, at 6.30pm led by Rev Tim West with carol singing to the music of the Salvation Army Band. This will be followed by baptisms in the pond, which is always a moving and humbling event
• Christmas on the Green at Chalbury Corner is a marvellous start to the festive season, and this year it will take place on Tuesday 18 December. The local businesses thereabouts combine to lay on events for the children, with food and drinks for all to enjoy. The high spot is carols around the Christmas tree, which will again be led by the Preston Pantomime Group. They have improved since I left the Group – singing was never my strong point! – so there is sure to be a great atmosphere, and a very special guest - ho, ho, ho - will be there to take orders for Christmas Day. Starting at 5.30pm this is a festive event not to be missed.
