Preston & Sutton Poyntz

Carols ring out over Preston and Sutton Poyntz

In what has become a local tradition of very successful family Christmas on the Green events, some of the shops at Chalbury Corner - Goadsby, Headstyle and Chalbury Wine Stores - together with the Spar Shop on Preston Road, have again combined to erect a Christmas tree on the lawn in front of the shops.

On Monday 21 December from 5pm they have also organised a festive sing-along which will be led by the Preston Pantomime Group.

Mulled wine and mince pies will be on offer, and I believe that a collection will be taken for Help the Heroes.

Later on that same busy evening the Salvation Army will be accompanying the outdoor carol service led by Rev Tim West on the green at the start of Mission Hall Lane in Sutton Poyntz at 6.30pm, followed by the baptisms in the pond.

In case of a cold evening, mulled wine and mince pies will be available in the Mission Hall. This is another firm favourite in our local calendar, and always well supported.

The recent Abbeyfield fete held at McPherson House in Wyke Oliver Road raised £90 for the residents’ amenities fund.

They are very grateful to everyone who helped to make this such an enjoyable event.

Caroline Crisp is at home now after her recent accident and long spell in hospital.

I know that I speak for her many friends when I wish her all the very best for a continuing and speedy recovery.

Mary Warran reports that the November meeting of the Preston Ladies Circle was attended by 33 ladies, who enjoyed a practical talk given by Abigail Warring on Reflexology, with Joan Balem as a very willing volunteer for a 'hands on' demonstration.

The next meeting is on Wednesday 16 December at 2 pm in the Village Hall. This will be the Christmas party, and visitors are very welcome.

As of Sunday 13 December, cycling is permitted on the Preston Beach Wall between Cafe Oasis and the Sluice Gardens.

In the winter months this should be OK, but being a cyclist myself I can foresee problems in the busy summer months.

With a proper cycle track alongside the beach wall, perhaps this should be used during the summer to keep pedestrians and cyclists apart?

Last, but not least, my greetings for the festive season.

May your Christmas be a time of peace and happiness, and the New Year bring all that you would wish for yourself and your family.
