The Gnomes wonderful lunches in the Mission hall are fast becoming a legend, and the latest Christmas lunch was again a delight.
In a departure from the norm – and a measure of their growing professionalism – not only did they offer a choice of menu, but sat down to dine with the assembled throng themselves. After the pate starter and sorbet, there was a choice of home cooked beef or salmon, Christmas pudding or mousse then coffee and mints to finish.
The hall was full to capacity, and the competition to spot the disguised Santa caused much merriment as some people failed to recognise themselves!
Everyone agreed that this was another marvellous village event and a fine way to start the festive season, demonstrated by sustained applause after John Allan thanked the Gnomes for all their hard work.
Maureen Bond, Brown Owl of the 2nd Preston Brownies has sent out a plea for help.
She says that they desperately need more 7 - 10 year old girls to join them during the Guiding Centenary year. This would be a good time to take part as there are many exciting activities planned to celebrate this very special year. If you have a daughter or granddaughter who might like to go along for a 'taster' session of Brownies, please ring Maureen on 83402 or Ruth on 833901. They would be very pleased to hear from you.
A reminder that the 10th Snowball, organised by the ladies - Julie, Rosemarie, Tomina and Yvonne - of St Andrew's Church, will be taking place at Hotel Prince Regent on Saturday, 9 January.
There will be dancing to music from Tempo and a buffet. For tickets, at £20 each, please ring Julie on 837289 – all proceeds go towards the church.
Fresh Fish has come to Chalbury Corner!
In a corner of the Chalbury Wine Stores car park Jason Hemming of Portland Sea Bass Ltd has been selling the latest local catch. He was there in all that bitterly cold weather from 12 to 6.30pm every day before Christmas, and hopes to continue into the New Year.
He will always have bass on sale, and sometimes cod, pollock, red mullet, sole or scallops depending on what has been caught. This is an excellent new facility for the area, so please support him if you can.
Anne Caddick reports that the Preston-cum-SP WI December Christmas party was enjoyed by all members.
Business was kept to a minimum, and replaced by delicious party fare. Lydia Holmes read a short story she had entered in a WI competition, and carols were sung to round off a very pleasant afternoon.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 7 January at 2.15pm in the Village Hall.
