Coffee at the Spice Ship helps a good cause

Recently the Rev Tim West hosted a coffee morning in the Spice Ship pub to raise funds for the Weymouth and Portland Breast Cancer Group.

The Group give not only support but friendship, information and fun at its meetings at Weymouth Bay Methodist Church on the first Friday of every month between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. This provides the opportunity for ladies who have, or have had the disease to chat, enjoy some refreshments and occasionally listen to a speaker.

The enjoyment event at the Spice Ship raised over £100 to help the Group activities and charity donations, and Rev Tim, Landlady Wendy and all who helped and attended are to be congratulated on a great effort for this most worthwhile of causes.

Although the weather prevented some members from attending the January Sutton Poyntz Village WI Meeting, a good number, including three newcomers, heard Martin Hastings describe community projects in Kenya.

He told how the Dorset Expeditionary Society had taken groups to help build medical and educational facilities and of the benefits of links forged between the young people of Dorset and Kenya.

The Craft Day on Saturday 10 April was announced, and members were urged to take part in events designed to bring the WI to the attention of the village, including short stories from their childhood to provide snapshots of a very different time of ‘growing-up’.

It was a good afternoon, in spite of the cold, and the next takes place on Wednesday, 3 February at 2.15pm in the Mission Hall. Visitors are always welcome.

The St Andrew’s School 200 club held the January draw in Mr Boucher’s Year 4 class.

The first prize of £50, drawn by Anthony Mathers, went to Elaine Montgomery; the £30 prize, drawn by Jo Cobb, went to Mrs Cox; the £15 prize, drawn by George Kelman-Johns, to Jane Cooke.

You have to be in it to win it, so give Mel (832467) a ring if you would like to help to swell school funds.

The traffic lights at Chalbury Corner Road are causing long delays, but at least the work is much needed water improvements which will benefit us all.

The ‘get into lane’ sign as you approach from Weymouth caused some initial confusion. Motorists thought they had to queue on the left of the road for Littlemoor and on the right, the other side of the white line, for Osmington!

Chaos resulted, but most people hopefully now know what the sign means.
