Preston & Sutton Poyntz

The December Preston Christmas Market was held in a festive and welcoming atmosphere which was reflected in the £148 which was raised for the two charities of the day, Cry and Chickerell Primary School.
Cry helps to restore young lives blighted by adversity, and Chickerell pupils are aiming to provide new recreational facilities for the local community. The overall amount raised for charity in 2009 reached the amazing total of £972, up over 10% on 2008! Well done to everyone concerned.
The next Preston Market will take place on Saturday, 13 February in the Church Rooms between 10am and 12.30pm. Why not drop in for a browse amongst the many stalls selling excellent local goods and enjoy some refreshments with friends old and new?
During a recent walk along the Beach Wall I watched the heavy machinery reshaping the shingle bank after the rough weather.
It may be just an illusion, but work to keep shingle in place in seems to be happening more frequently nowadays – though many will remember when the beach road could be closed for days on end as storms deposited tons of stones on it.
Talking of holdups, the traffic lights have thankfully disappeared from Chalbury Corner. and the work was completed quicker than the signs suggested.
More delays will occur, though, when the new water main is connected to adjoining houses, and there are now no less than three sets of lights along Littlemoor Road.
The next Team Walk will take place on Saturday, 13 February starting from the town car park in Beaminster at 11am.
The route will take in Netherbury and Riverside Cottage and will be about 5 miles long. I have never known the local area to be as wet underfoot as it is now, so the walk could be muddy in places and stout footwear is recommended. You should also look after the inner person by taking along a picnic and warm drink.
If you need any further information, give Pat and Rob a ring on 832857, or just turn up on the day for a great walk in good company.
Sadly the HSBC branch at Chalbury Corner will be closing down permanently from 2.30pm on Thursday, 18 February.
The cash machine will probably still be operational, but to my mind this is hardly a substitute for the service provided by our two lovely lady cashiers, Sue and Jerry, and I know that many local residents are grateful for the help and assistance that they have provided over many years.
