The latest Sutton Poyntz coffee morning at the Mission Hall was attended by over 60 people, who enjoyed the opportunity to meet friends old and new over a cup of coffee and slice of homemade cake.
It was also the chance to view an exhibition of talented work by the Sutton Poyntz Art Group. The friendly group meet regularly at the Hall, and their paintings, which covered a wide range of styles, were greatly admired by those attending.
The popular Coffee Mornings take place on the first Friday in the month between 10.30am and noon, with the entrance fee of £1.50 – covering refreshments as well – going towards the upkeep of the Hall.
A number of people have contacted me about the new W&PBC bye-laws allowing cycling on the sea wall between Overcombe Corner and the Sluice Gates at Greenhill.
They were concerned at possible accidents between walkers and cyclists, and alarmed at the idea mooted by some cycling organisations that cycling should also be permitted between the Sluice Gates and town.
I took up these points with George Heron of W&PBC’s Highways & Transportation Department. He agrees that that the section from Sluice Gardens to the town is narrow and not suitable for shared use in its current form.
He went on to stress the importance of cyclists riding in a safe manner, and explained that the new bye-laws will make it an offence to cycle on the promenade in such a manner as to cause danger or give reasonable grounds for annoyance to other persons using the promenade.
W&PBC are responsible for enforcement and the Magistrates’ Court would deal with any prosecutions which carry a maximum fine of £500. Whilst some people think that cycling on the wall is unnecessary as there is a perfectly good cycle path nearby, the bye-laws do seem to cover the main grounds for complaint.
The 2nd Preston Brownies Pack has vacancies for young girls from nearly 7 years of age up to 10. They meet every Thursday in term time between 5pm and 6.15pm in the Scutt Hall.
Activities already planned are jewellery making, art, games and cooking, plus treasure hunts when the evenings become lighter. This is also a very exciting time to join, as it is the Guides Centenary Year when many interesting and unusual events are planned to celebrate the occasion.
Drop in to a meeting to see what goes on, or give Maureen (834012) or Ruth (833901) a ring if you would like more information.
