It has been known for a long time that singing is good for us, even if, like me you don’t have much of a singing voice.
This idea has been put into practice at the Church Rooms on Thursday afternoons, when a Singing for the Brain group gathers, organised by the Alzheimer’s Society.
The afternoon starts with the chance to relax and meet the other participants over refreshments, followed by exercises to warm up the vocal chords, under the direction of a trained leader. Then it is into songs old and new, of all types and styles, with and without musical accompaniment.
This fun afternoon not only helps by recalling much loved songs, but can help to boost self confidence. Carers are especially welcome, and if you would like further information, give Malcolm Cumber a ring on 259740.
The Sutton Poyntz Biodiversity Group’s Garden Watch scheme, where local residents report on the bird population in their gardens, has gone from strength to strength.
Starting with just nine participants a year ago, John Newbould reports that 17 completed forms were received last month. Over the year the most frequent recorded bird was the Robin, followed by the Blue Tit and Blackbird. By contrast, the Song Thrush has only rarely been seen.
Apparently the Single Green Woodpecker has been spotted 26 times. They feed on ants in lawns, which may explain why we had one in our back garden for quite a while.
John says the Group are particularly keen to recruit contributors from Wilmslow Road, Verlands Road and the southern end of Sutton Road. If you would like to take part, call John (837384) or Dave Caddy (832907).
Ask them also for a copy of their excellent newsletter, which is both attractive and informative.
There have been a number of burglaries and attempted burglaries in the Preston area recently.
An offender, about 5'10" tall slim with short dark hair, visited many properties but only appears to have entered those he could gain access to without making any noise i.e. though insecure doors and windows. His footprints have been found at the rear of many other properties but as they were locked up the offender left them alone and moved on.
Please remember to secure your homes at night, and if you notice anything untoward contact the Police immediately on 222222.
Mary Warran says that thirty members attended the last meeting of the Preston Ladies Circle to hear a talk by Reverend Millard and his wife Mary.
Since 2001 they have made regular visits to Rwanda for SIGNPOST INTERNATIONAL to help the Rwandan people. They displayed slides and recounted inspiring stories of courage during the genocide and planned extermination of the ethnic Tutsi tribe.
The Circle meets on the 4th Wednesday in the month at 2pm in the Village Hall. Visitors new members are always welcome.
