Scout cooks make a meal of it!

11:12am Tuesday 16th March 2010

Congratulations are due to to the cooking team of the Weymouth East Scouts who meet in the Scutt Hall.

After winning the District cooking competition they went on to represent Weymouth & Portland at the County competition, where they had to make a three course meal for four people within a total budget of only £15.

The team, comprising Josh “Squashy” Purslow, Toby DeKretsa, Matt Mildon and Poppy Richards, created leek and potato soup served with camp bread, moussaka with salad and warm pitta followed by Eton Mess. All these items were made from scratch, including the bread, on just two gas rings at a total cost of only £11.66!

They won second place, only 5 points behind the winners, and the Assistant County Commissioner for Scouts decided that as the standard was so high, and the two first teams so closely matched, that they should both go on to represent the County at the regional competition in March. This competition is for the best of the South and South West regions.

In the competitions so far they have been one team member short, but are looking forward to having a full team for the regional heats, where they will be keeping to the same menu. We wish them the best of luck, and I will be sure to let you know how they get on.

The St Andrew’s School 200 club held the March draw in Mr Cobb’s Year 3 class.

The first prize of £50, drawn by Olivia Treadwell, went to Jenni Chaloner; the £30 prize, drawn by Ben Jones, went to Miss Ellis; the £15 prize, drawn by Tom Frost, to Sarah Lindsay.

If you would like to take part in this monthly draw, the proceeds of which help to supply facilities for the children in the school, give Mel (832467) a ring.

The dreaded march of ‘progress’ has finally reached Sutton Poyntz, with the arrival of first yellow lines in the village.

These have been painted at the entrance to Old Bincombe Lane in order to keep the area clear for the bus to reverse.

Though undoubtedly necessary they are a little unsightly, but remembering that fifty years ago the council wanted to fill in the pond to create extra car parking perhaps we should count our blessings!

Easter lilies in remembrance of loved ones are always a beautiful part of the Easter decorations of St Andrew’s Church.

If you would like to make a donation towards the lilies or any other Easter flowers, contact Caroline Crisp on 832529 as soon as possible so that they can be ordered in time.

It is planned that the names of those remembered will be recorded and displayed.
