Youngsters grow up, dress up and move up from Preston Pre-school

The long established Preston Pre-School ended this school year with a mini prom.

All the children dressed up and looked very smart as they played traditional party games and had a party lunch, before being joined by their parents who watched the children receiving certificates to recognise their time and achievements while at the Pre-School.

As you can see from the photograph, this was a happy occasion, but it was also a sad goodbye to 16 children who were leaving to go on to school. Helen Plested said the day really lived up to the Pre-School's motto of 'where learning is fun'.

The mini prom was held at the Village hall, where the Pre-School provides 5 sessions a week for children from 2½ years of age. They still have some spaces left for the next school year, and can be contacted on 07826018677 or www.prestonpreschool@hotmail.co.uk If you go down to Sutton Poyntz today, you’d better not go alone, because today’s the day the Scarecrows have their picnic – with apologies to the nursery rhyme!

Yes, the Scarecrows are out in force in the gardens of Sutton Poyntz and can be viewed until Saturday 6 August. To choose your winner, pick up a voting slip and location map of the scarecrows from the Springhead pub – cost only £1 – and stroll around to see them all.

This makes a marvellous family outing in an idyllic setting, with even the chance of a pint in the Springhead for thirsty parents at the end. Don’t miss it; the standard last year was very high indeed.

The hedge bordering the pedestrian walkway between Wyke Oliver Road and Chalbury Close has been cut back, just as it was starting to become difficult to get through.

In the past W&PBC have been responsible for this work, so well done to them for their prompt response.

Sutton Poyntz will be holding its annual vegetable show on Saturday 6 August at the Scutt Hall.

The doors will open at 9am for participants to display their wares, with voting by members of the public from 10 to 11am. There are categories for the longest runner bean, longest cucumber, heaviest marrow, selection of herbs, 3 carrots, tomatoes, courgettes or beans and lots more.

If the voting saps your strength, light refreshments will be available including delicious homemade cakes.

In addition to the classes mentioned there will also be the famous “spud in a tub” competition, competing for the Des Evans trophy for the heaviest quantity of spuds grown in a tub. Prize giving will start at 11.45am followed by the presentation of the Des Evans trophy. The morning will be rounded off with the announcement and presentation to the winner of the village Scarecrow Competition.

Proceeds will be going to the local young person’s charity WAVES. If you need any more details, contact Peter Sheaves on 01305 833338 or peter.sheaves@btinternet.com
