The weather is kind to events in Preston and Sutton Poyntz

The Mission Hall Trust annual Cream Tea afternoon in the Mission Hall orchard was once again blessed with excellent weather. The gazebos were definitely needed as a hot sun shone down on the villagers, visitors and just a few wasps enjoying scones, jam and cream in an idyllic setting. The proceeds raised from the event go towards the upkeep of the hall, but without doubt the major benefit of the afternoon was the chance to enjoy good company in a wonderful village setting.

The Abbeyfield Summer fete at Macpherson House was equally blessed with good weather. A large number of people both residents and visitors enjoyed the wide range of stalls and to catch up with news over a cup of tea or something from the barbecue.

The big hit of the afternoon were the youngsters of WOW, who put on a polished and accomplished singing performance. Not only are they a tribute to themselves, but to those who put in lot of hard work to help them achieve such a high standard. Proceeds from the fete went towards the Residents Amenities Fund Representatives from the four ‘halls’ in Preston – the Church Rooms, Mission Hall, Preston Village Hall and Scutt Hall - got together recently to distribute the proceeds from the garden party held in the Rectory garden. The magnificent total of over £1900 was raised, which means that each hall receives £475 to help with the cost of upkeep. This was a marvellous community event which will benefit the users of all the halls throughout Preston and Sutton Poyntz, and the Garden Party Organising Committee would like to thank everyone – those who helped and those who attended - who helped to make it such a successful day.

As usual the Chalbury Corner roundabout is a delight to the eye, covered in flower beds with a myriad of brightly coloured blooms. It is a really welcoming sight to locals and visitors alike as they approach Weymouth from the east. It is perhaps a pity that the roundabouts on the new road, particularly those down by the Park and Ride and Morrison’s, are just a mass of weeds. Hardly an attractive gateway to the Borough.

An informed source tells me that the reason for the difference is that Chalbury Corner is tended by the excellent W&PBC Parks Department, while those on the new road are the responsibility of West Dorset. Perhaps the building of new council offices in Dorchester has used up all their money?
