Radipole and Southill

TWENTY-SIX residents met at Holly Court with local councillors, neighbourhood police officers and guest speakers, for the recent Residents’ Community Meeting.

Leading the PACT section, PC Kevin Eames reported on issues previously raised.

Officers had addressed the litter problems, but there is follow-up required, so this is “work in progress.”

The Homewatch scheme is being strengthened and extended. PC Eames will be publishing full details as soon as these preparations have been completed, hopefully in the New Year.

He reported an increase in anti-social behaviour at some specific areas in the ward and a spate of burglaries in the vicinity of Preston.

Issues to be addressed by next meeting were agreed and noted.

Nigel Williams, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Dorset Fire & Rescue Service, gave a superb illustrated presentation on how the service has been modified in response to legal demands of successive governments, becoming a full rescue service as well as a prevention agency.

Highlighting the excellent value for money delivered with lower funding, he showed how the relocation of the Weymouth Fire Station is to be achieved, providing a state-of-the-art Community Fire Station at Westhaven.

This ensures continuing development in the provision of an excellent Fire & Rescue Service, fulfilling its roles of emergency response, accident prevention and statutory advice, Friends groups representatives, Philip Grout-Smith (Radipole Park & Gardens) and Sheila Goodwin (Lodmoor Country Park) spoke of the activities of their groups.

RPG Friends are seeking grant funding to bring about an ambitious long term project to provide toilets, a meeting room and multi-use games area.

THE Friends of Lodmoor Country Park had recently held their first AGM.

Much has been achieved this year, which has seen growing support for events such as litter picks, a children’s scarecrow competition, seats, bins and refurbishments.

Both friends’ groups are keen to welcome new members, at a cost of just £1 per household!

Gill Penwell, of Weymouth & Portland Carers, spoke of the recent information day at the library, that had been part of Carers’ Week; an important dissemination of the help for carers, including registration at doctors’ surgeries.

The meeting closed with thanks from the chair to all contributors and for the hospitality of Holly Court.
