Southill Community Centre is the home of the thriving Short Mat Bowls Club.

At the recent AGM, members celebrated their club’s growing success.

In addition to regular weekly games, "friendlies" at Crossways, Cerne Abbas and Midsomer Norton, the teams have taken part in local competitions at Bere Regis, Wincanton and Wareham, as well as the West Dorset League.

Some members also play at county level.

Social activities feature strongly and the coach trip to Exeter Ice Show had been a great day out.

Whilst celebrating the success of competition winners and awarding trophies to their champions, members enjoyed tasty snacks and wine provided by Jean Turner and her helpers.

Based at the Southill Community Centre, the club attracts members from a very wide area.

Regular Monday and Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening sessions are characterised by a friendly sense of competitive rivalry and good fun.

New members are always welcome.

SPEAKING at the recent Meeting Point community lunch in St Aldhelm’s Church Hall, Chris Carmen, of Dorset Community Action, described the group as a “third sector umbrella organisation, supporting community groups in Dorset.”

Free funding advice is offered and assistance with writing and submitting bids.

The DCA website lists new funding sources.

To date, training and advice has assisted over one hundred local groups.

Groups and organisations seeking help or more details may contact Chris Carmen 01202 847603.

There followed a round up of news from the groups represented, with informal networking and sharing of ideas over the usual delicious buffet lunch.
