FARMER P is holding weekly drop-in sessions entitled “Knit & Chat”.

Young and old, male and female are invited to come and chat, make friends, with or without knitting from 10am every Thursday morning.

She is now in partnership with the ENABLE group that deals with physically impaired and vulnerable adults. Developing a centre for growing and supplying vegetables in their seasons are central to Farmer P’s plans and she aims to develop a centre for the local community, including a full range of opportunities for all.

St AUGUSTINE’S Church Hall was packed for the Residents’ Community Meeting with local councillors, police and fire officers and representatives of community groups.

PC Kevin Eames reported on issues previously raised.

There are currently fewer incidents of anti-social behaviour in local parks and gardens, but continued vigilance is required. Unauthorised occupiers of tents on Lodmoor had moved, the area cleaned, needles removed and the travellers at New Look had left, after some intervention by fire officers and police. Cycling dangerously on pavements is an ongoing problem and insufficient time has been available to address the situation, so this will feature in the current priorities.

Additional issues agreed include vandalism and noise in specific areas.

SIMON Williams, Borough manager for economic development & tourism, gave a presentation on preparations for the 2012 Sailing Olympics.

He spoke of the opportunities for business and the regeneration prospects for the area. After referring to important investments, he listed the development of community events and the significance of the Cultural Olympiad, which is inexorably linked with the games. In outlining some of the arrangements now being prepared, including use of the Pavilion Peninsula to provide a “Festival Village”, he explained traffic plans and the reasons for road works currently being carried out by the utility companies.

All agreed that this was a superb insight, providing interesting details that affect everyone.

FRIENDS of the local parks and gardens reported on their activities and plans and there is to be a re-launch of Weymouth Carers.

The next residents’ community meeting is planned for Wednesday, December 1 at Holly Court.
